100th anniversary: Gaps repaired on Missoula's last brick street

By KIM BRIGGEMAN of the Missoulian | Posted: Monday, April 30, 2012 10:00 pm |

They don’t make streets like this any more. That’s probably a good thing.

You don’t want to be, say, sipping hot coffee on the rattling ride along Railroad Street, the only one in Missoula with stretches paved in brick.

It’s been that way for 100 years, or since shortly after the day – April 25, 1912 – that Mayor John Evans climbed onto a wagon parked at Higgins Avenue and Front Street and...

Night paving work set on Route 202 in Haverstraw; Route 59 in Ramapolahud.com

The return of spring means road crews are sprouting up across the county.A paving project is set to begin Monday on Route 202 in Haverstraw, and will be followed by one along Route 59 in Ramapo. Both jobs will occur overnight, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., to minimize inconvenience to drivers and business owners, the state Department of Transportation said.

If the weather cooperates, a small stretch of Route 202 from Gurnee Avenue to Route 9W will be closed on Monday night so workers from Yonkers Contracting Co., the contractor on the job, can mill the road and repave it. A detour will be posted for drivers.

Once that work, which will likely last about a week, is done, crews will shift to a much bigger project spanning Route 59 from unincorporated Ramapo to Suffern. The work zone will range from Spook Rock Road in Ramapo to Hillcrest Road in Suffern, near Good Samaritan Hospital.

By: Dennis U. Atuanya

Crude oil, albeit in decreasing proportions, will likely remain significant in the global energy utilization mix for the next few years.
